BOOK TOUR REVIEW: Final Life by Rose Garcia

The Transhuman Chronicles, Book 1
Eight lives. You’d think Dominique would get it right, but she’s failed every time. Now on her final life, Dominique must discover the secrets of her past before confronting the Transhuman hunter who wants to kill her for the last time. Farrell, a mysterious Transhuman protector, and Trent, a hot guy from school, want to help. But it’s up to her to get it right this time—or she’ll be dead. For real.
3.5 FLEURS DE LIS
Dominique has just moved to Houston from her previous home up north, so it’s a big change. It’s even bigger when weird things start happening to her…she sometimes spaces out and sees a creepy, desolate red desert and visions of a strange little girl. To make things harder, she finds herself torn between two guys: the strong, protective Farrell–who just happens to live under her roof, and the sweet, smart Trent.
Her parents and Farrell let her know that they are part of a race called Transhumans–beings who can control energy and possess certain powers. Not only must Dominique contend with that revelation, but they also let her know that she is on her final of nine lives she was given to defeat a dark Transhuman called Tavion. And if she doesn’t succeed this time, it could mean destruction for all humanity.
I struggled through the first half of this book. There was just nothing in it that grabbed me, and the story line and characters felt very familiar. This could have been any of several paranormal YA books I have already read. But at about the last 30%, it kicked into a more interesting place.
Dominique didn’t have too much personality at all…in fact I found her a little annoying. She tended to whine. I couldn’t connect with her and I have no clue why two guys would want her. I would hope she grows as a character after this first book.
I found the concept of the Transhumans to be OK, but felt it was lacking a little in development. Transhumans = angels = X-Men was the gist of what I got. Like I said, this reminded me of other paranormal YA books I have read in the past…so not a new idea here.
The final showdown at the end was a bit more action-packed, and I enjoyed it. I just wish Dominique would have been able to fight for herself a bit more.
Final Life was kind of up and down for me, but I would recommend it for hardcore paranormal YA lovers.
About the Author
I’m a lawyer turned writer who’s always been fascinated by science fiction and fantasy. From a very young age, I often often had my nose buried in books about other-worlds, fantastical creatures, and life and death situations. More recently I’ve been intrigued by a blend of science fiction and reality, and the idea that some supernatural events are, indeed, very real. Fueled by my imagination, I created The Transhuman Chronicles—a series of books about people who have overcome human limitations. The first in this series is Final Life. Between juggling family life with my husband and two kids, I’m working on the companion to Final Life. So stay tuned!
