Spells by Aprilynne Pike (Laurel Series, Book 2): Goodreads Review
Spells is the second book in the Laurel series. I posted the review for the first book, Wings, last week. Here is what I thought of the second book.
SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES, WINGS!!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Now that Laurel and her family know the truth about what she really is, she must immerse herself in the faerie world to learn as much as she can in the summer before her junior year. Naturally, this means spending time away from her now-boyfriend David…and it also means getting MUCH closer to her would-be faerie love, Tamani.
When Laurel goes back home and tries to resume a normal teenage life, she finds it more than a little difficult. She is constantly guarded because the troll she pissed off in the first book is now out for revenge. Laurel finds it extremely difficult to maintain her position between two worlds. Eventually, this all comes to a point where she must make a very difficult decision, without knowing in her heart whether it was really the right one.
I liked this book much better than its’ predecessor. The characters were already fleshed out, and this novel shows new strengths and facets of their personalities we had no idea about. There were only a couple of new characters introduced in this novel, so that was a plus. Sometimes as book series go on, too many superfluous characters get added and the story becomes a little harder to keep track of.
It was so interesting to get a look into the faerie world, Avalon. Basically, they have a perfect, self sufficient society–even if it is caste based. The faerie world is rich and entwined with bits of faerie stories that we all have heard before (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, of course.)
So the ending of this book is all going to culminate in a bigger picture in the next book, Illusions. Which I will be reading, soon. Fortunately Ms. Pike’s writing seemed less trite this time around, and I hope it will get better as the series progresses.
