BOOK TOUR INTERVIEW: The Shapeshifter’s Secret by Heather Ostler

Today I am hosting an interview with Heather Ostler, author of The Shapeshifter’s Secret!

LOVE this cover!!

Book Description

In Julia’s life, timing is everything. Like the time her paranoid father put bars on her window so she wouldn’t sneak out at night—even though she’s never given him a reason not to trust her. Or the time this weird new kid showed up at her school and pretty much every girl in sight instantly and inexplicably fell in love with him. What was up with that?

But as time moves on, things in Julia’s life go from strange to seriously impossible. Now it’s all she can do to keep herself and the life she’s always known from falling apart.

This fast-paced action-adventure story is packed with humor, romance, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the very last page. Get lost in a world of hidden royalty, shifting alliances, and dangerous vendettas, but don’t ever forget: nothing is what it seems.

My Interview with Heather

1.  Tell us a little about yourself.

I live in Utah near the beautiful mountains with my husband and two pugs. I love reading, writing, doing ballet, and spending time with my family.

2.  What made you want to become a writer?

I struggled reading when I was younger and later realized it was because I was reading all the wrong books. Once I discovered The Harry Potter series my attitude changed. After that I couldn’t stop reading novels about magical worlds, mythical creatures, and paranormal adventures. I knew that I wanted to create that same kind of magic for others, and have been writing since then.

3.  Who or what gives you inspiration?

I love listening to music by Tori Amos, Shakira, and Bon Jovi before I write. Movies like The Phantom of the Opera, and Pride and Prejudice also motivate me to get back to my laptop. Really even the smallest thing can ignite a spark of inspiration for my writing. Some of my stories are created from simple everyday experiences.
4.  Tell us about The Shapeshifter’s Secret.

Sixteen-year-old Julia Levesque is used to dealing with problems. From her overprotective father to her absent mother to Caleb, the new boy that pretty much every girl has fallen in love with. But everything changes when Julia’s reactions become oddly vicious and angry—more animal than human. As time moves on, things in Julia’s life go from strange to seriously impossible. Now it’s all she can do to keep herself and the life she’s always known from falling apart.

5.  What’s the hardest part of being a writer?

Writer’s block really can be challenging. When I don’t feel the creative juices flowing, I try to surround myself with positive and inspiring things like music, photography, and good movies.

6. What do you need around you to write (special drink, lucky items, etc)?

I’m always cold and I like writing during the winter months, so I always have a space heater going–and preferably a cup of hot chocolate.

7.  What are some of your favorite books?

I have so many! Harry Potter, Ella Enchanted, Pretty Little Liars, The Series of Unfortunate Events, The Hunger Games, and Twilight are just some of them.

8.  Are your characters based on anyone you know?

Julia isn’t based off one person, but there are a lot of pieces of her that are influenced by others. As a writer I can’t help making mental notes to incorporate certain people’s personalities, physical characteristics, and actions into my writing.

9.  What, if anything, are you working on right now?

I am actually working on the sequel to The Shapeshifter’s Secret.

10.  Why do you love writing?

I love writing because I realize the influence of a good book. I see how reading changed my life, and I always hope to create a similar positive influence for others with my stories.

  1. Sounds like a good book and I love the cover. I can also sympathize when she says she’s always cold; I am too., which is why I love hot drinks and knee socks.

  2. Carol, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one!

  3. Thanks Carrie for having me!
