BOOK TOUR INTERVIEW: Snapshots by Patricia Lynne
by Patricia Lynne
My name is Cyclop Blaine and I am a real person.
“You are mine.”
I am a real person: heedless of a childhood spent under the supervision of an old man I only know as Master.
“You belong to me.”
I am a real person: regardless of my teenage years bound by violence as the adoptive son of the Victory Street Gang’s leader.
“You will obey me.”
I am a real person: despite the visions I see in others’ eyes. Snapshots of their futures.
“You will cower before me.”
I am a real person: my life will be my own. I belong to no one.
“You. Are. MINE.”
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a born and raised Michigander. I am a creative junkie. If it’s creative I will try it. When I’m not writing I’m making jewelry or knitting. In terms of books, if it has fangs or fur I’m there, but I do love serial killer true crime as well.
2. What made you want to become a writer?
Honestly, I had no plans on being a writer. My artistic outlet was art and I even attended college for a year in art. I’ve always been a daydreamer though. I’d think up a story and add to it in my head. One day, I decided to write down one of my daydreams. Just for fun. It grew from that.
3. Who or what gives you inspiration?
I’m not sure what gives me inspiration. Ideas come pretty randomly to me… usually in the shower or when I’m trying to fall asleep and can’t be bothered to get out of bed.
4. Tell us about Snapshots.
Snapshots is about Cyclop Blaine who can see the future when he looks in your eyes, but his future lies in his past and is about to catch up with him. He isn’t in control of his life, someone else is. He’s trying to break free and be his own person. The story also touches on sexuality a bit. I was in a Twitter chat once and we were discussing LGBT books and how there’s a lot of books with gay characters, but not many books with bisexual characters. I left the chat thinking I’d like to write a character who is bisexual. Next day, I had Cyc bouncing around my head.
5. What’s the hardest part of being a writer?
There are a couple things. Motivation can be tough to summon. Sometimes I think I need a boss to make me write. Focusing on the wrong reason is another toughie. Like most writers, I have a bad habit of checking stats and when they are stagnant or nonexistent, I can get really bummed out and not want to write.
6. What do you need around you to write (special drink, lucky items, etc)?
There’s really nothing special I keep around me. Maybe I need a lucky charm.
7. What are some of your favorite books?
I love Heather Brewer’s writing. She’s working on the Slayer Chronicles right now and I’m so excited about it. But I’m not reading what’s released yet. I’m holding out until the whole series is released so I can read one right after the other. (She can do some evil cliffhangers.)
8. Are your characters based on anyone you know?
Jacob in Snapshots I used inspiration from my nephew Emmet. Emmet is six now and he says and does some of the craziest things. Every scene with Jacob, if I could see Emmet saying or doing it, then Jacob said or did it.
9. What, if anything, are you working on right now?
I’m supposed to be working on the sequel to Being Human. It’s called Being Vampire, but I’m having motivation problems. I keep getting stressed about how Being Vampire will stand up to Being Human in readers’ eyes and that’s making me not want to work on it.
10. Why do you love writing?
I like how creative it is. It really lets me tap into the creative part of my mind. Not all stories I write will be published, but the ideas I come up with are always fun and interesting to me.
