Just Remember to Breathe

by Charles Sheehan-Miles

New Adult Contemporary

Book Description

Alex Thompson’s life is following the script. A pre- law student at Columbia University, she’s focused on her grades, her life and her future. The last thing she needs is to reconnect with the boy who broke her heart.
Dylan Paris comes home from Afghanistan severely injured and knows that the one thing he cannot do is drag Alex into the mess he’s made of his life.
When Dylan and Alex are assigned to the same work study program and are forced to work side by side, they have to make new ground rules to keep from killing each other.
The only problem is, they keep breaking the rules.

The first rule is to never, ever talk about how they fell in love.

MY THOUGHTS: 5 OUT OF 5 FLEURS DE LIS

Just Remember to Breathe by Charles Sheehan-Miles

This is not your usual boy and girl meet, fall in love, encounter conflict, then come back together story. Dylan and Alex have already met, fallen in love, and ended things, painfully. Dylan and Alex collide again when they are assigned to the same work study job…and it’s not long before the old sparks begin to fly.

This was an awesome book that dealt with such important issues as sexual assault and PTSD, but also came with a heavy dose of romance. That may sound weird, but it all came together very nicely.

I really liked both the main characters. Alex is one of five sisters from a rich, powerful family, and she’s moved clear across the country to escape her parents’ scrutiny. Dylan’s just returned from a lengthy hospital stay after a roadside bomb blew up his truck while he was serving in Iraq. Alex and Dylan heaven’t spoken to each other since their relationship ended months before. But it’s clear when they meet again that neither one of them fell out of love.

Alex and Dylan had very hot chemistry, and I loved that they didn’t jump into bed with each other straight away. They took the time to rebuild each other’s trust, learn from past mistakes, and truly devote themselves to one another. Yes, Dylan has a lot of issues now that he’s been in combat…but Alex is there for him no matter what. And Dylan will do anything it takes to make sure Alex is happy this time around.

I thought the ending was perfect, and Dylan had me in tears…and that doesn’t happen much. I love to see a non-cookie cutter relationship in books. It makes the romance so much more meaningful. I think after all they’ve been through, there’s not much Dylan and Alex can’t conquer now.
