Elfin by Quinn Loftis

I am a huge fan of Quinn Loftis’ Gray Wolves series, so I was pretty excited to start something new from her. While this book had a few similarities to her others, I found it to be kind of annoying in several ways.

Triktapic (Trik for short) is the most feared assassin in the realm of the Dark Elves. Ancient and powerful, he does the one thing he never would have imagined and falls in love with a human–Cassie Tate. Cassie is not just any human…she turns out to be Trik’s Chosen, sort of like a soulmate but much more than that. Unfortunately this means Cassie’s life is in danger. Trik has made a lot of enemies over the years, and using Cassie to get to him will be the first thing they do.

I found that this book reminded me at times of a few others: Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout, Wings by Aprilynne Pike, and even the books of Loftis’ own Gray Wolves series. We have the bad boy supernatural main character who falls in love with the girl he’s most definitely not supposed to. And, the relationship between Trik and Cassie had a heavy dose of insta-love, though getting the two together was not without its’ complications.

The other main problem I had with this book is that I hate back and forth when it comes to relationships between characters, and Elfin had a lot of this going on. It even had my hated “I love you so I’m breaking up with you for your own good” component. ARGGGG.

What I liked was that much of the Elven world was very original. I also enjoyed it when I learned the truth about Trik–that was when the book really started rolling along for me. And just like in Gray Wolves, Cassie has a kickass best friend that takes no prisoners and has snark to spare. Elora was always good for a laugh and I look forward to hearing more from her.

I liked this story, I just think its’ potential got weighed down by been there done that writing. I do think that since the book ended in a way I like, the next book in the series will be much better…and I look forward to reading it.
