Leaving a Legacy
by J.D. Pooker
We all want to leave something for our children—a better world, a name, money, etc.—so that they have something to remember us by when we are gone. In reality, our kids probably won’t ever forget us, but it is nice to leave them something, perhaps something they can pass down to their kids. I wanted to leave my boys something very special, something just from me, from my heart, so I created this book.
My boys aren’t nearly as old as the characters in the book, although they will be soon. Too soon. People aren’t kidding when they tell you times flies with your kids. I started writing The Ifs several years ago. I think my youngest was still in diapers and I know the oldest wasn’t in school yet, so it was a lot of fun for me to figure out what their personalities would be like when they were the age of the boys in the book. I watched how they acted at the time and projected it into the future. It will be interesting to see if my guess was right.
It will also be fun for the kids when they get older to come back and read this. I can’t wait to see how they react and what they say. Maybe it will embarrass them, maybe it will be the best story they’ve ever read. Either way, they’ll know it’s theirs and theirs alone.
It’s bittersweet to think about my kids getting older and exploring the world. I know my boys are going to have a lot of fantastic adventures when they get older, and I can’t wait to see what kinds of stories they bring home.
